(PEP)

There are services and medications available to help you after you have already had a potential exposure to HIV. It’s important to access them as quickly as possible after an exposure.

What is PEP?

PEP is a short-term HIV treatment taken within 72 hours after possible exposure to reduce the likelihood of acquiring HIV. It must be taken daily for 28 days and exactly as prescribed to be effective.

PEP is not the same as PrEP.

PrEP is taken daily before exposure for ongoing prevention.‍
PEP is taken after potential exposure and is meant for emergencies.
